St. Catharines rowing centre recognized with international architecture award

Congratulations to Raimondo + Associates Architects Inc.,  MJMA Architecture & Design and the entire team that designed and developed the Neil Campbell Rowing Centre. The facility was recognized with a 2023 Architecture Prize in the specialized facilities for sports, leisure and recreation category from the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS).

IAKS is the leading global non-profit organization for professionals from the sports, leisure and recreation facilities industry and recognizes exceptional accomplishment in facility operation and design through an international exemplary design awards program. The IAKS is an an organization recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

This year, the jury selected many inspiring projects that generate value for local communities – an important issue in the world of sport that also reflects the theme of the IAKS Congress: “Building resilient communities through sports and leisure facilities." The IAKS received 88 competition entries from 22 different countries, including Australia, Germany and Canada, Nepal, Thailand and Brazil. The St. Catharines rowing facility was among 11 recipients, including 5 others from Canada.

The Neil Campbell Rowing Centre was built on Henley Island in Port Dalhousie as a legacy facility for the 2022 Canada Games and will play host to the 2024 World Rowing Championships. Sport Tourism is an important and dynamic sector with wide ranging economic, cultural and social benefits for both host destinations and the sports industry, including world class facilities such as the Neil Campbell Rowing Centre.

TeamSTC is focused on Sports Tourism, leveraging successes to continue to attracting signature international and national events. Cultivating the potential of the Sport Tourism industry aligns with the City’s Strategic Plan, in addition to the economic development strategies at both the municipal and regional levels.

At its September 24, 2024 meeting, St. Catharines City Council approved the Economic Development and Tourism Strategy: 2024 to 2029.
